About the Project
The introduction of SOPI- a plantation technology specifically developed for conducting oil palm tree census caught the attention of Musirawas’ GIS team. The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in SOPI’s algorithms allows for more accurate detection of oil palm trees, especially for mature trees, where trees like coconut trees and banana trees often make this task more challenging. Besides the ability to conduct the mature trees census effectively, SOPI is also capable of detecting immature trees with satisfactory result. Regarding the challenges generated by immature trees’ small sizes and irregular shapes, SOPI’s results are considered much better than those from the software previously used.
Accurate oil palm tree census results are essential for Musirawas’ management to budget for oil palm tree maintenance activities such as budgeting for fertilizer purchases, pesticides, herbicides, estate labor plans, etc., and also to estimate FFB yield performance. Specifically for immature trees census, the data generated by SOPI is used to evaluate the planting activities of oil palm seedlings as part of the replanting activities.
