AI-Based Construction Site Safety Issues Detection

Construction is one of the most dangerous job sectors, and many injuries and deaths are reported annually around the world. These injuries and deaths not only caused suffering to workers and their families, but also incurred delays of project schedule and increased construction costs. Therefore, safety issues detection has become critical throughout the construction industry.

There is a growing necessity of developing innovative methods to automatically monitor the safety of the workers, in order to allow construction companies to reduce injuries, and to provide a safe work environment in their construction sites. These safety issues in the construction industry are now searching towards the science of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to locate the solutions.

Artificial Intelligence Empowers Construction Site Safety Issues Detection

We believe that with the help of AI, the safety of construction sites can be easily monitored. Computer vision is the field of artificial intelligence, used to develop the model for safety. By using a large number of digital images from the camera, a deep learning model can be trained to accurately identify and classify objects, so as to react to what they “see”, and to a certain extent help reduce accidents at the construction site.

Anavision developed an AI-Based Construction Site Safety Issues Detection System. Without the need to purchase another set of video camera systems, our system allows users to make use of the video streams from most of the existing CCTV systems being installed at the site to detect and identify the target safety issues happening in the construction site.

System Features:

  • Identify and detect any target safety-related issues (e.g. Missing Helmet, Missing PPE Vest, Missing Safety Belt, Smoking, Entering Danger Zone, etc.) in the construction site’s area
  • Differentiate the type of safety issues
  • Locate the safety-related issues in the video stream and highlight the equipment and/or worker/person which/who is committed to this safety in the video stream with a local user interface
  • Provide notification to the centralized system by reporting the type of issues committed as well as other log information

By using computer vision and machine learning techniques, Anavision will keep improving the detection accuracy and differentiation capabilities by capturing and tagging more images under real construction scenarios, and training models to improve the safety of the construction site.
